It’s that time again: spring is here! Spring cleanup can seem like a daunting task (see our post for a spring cleanup checklist!) but with the right tools, your spring cleanup will go smoothly and leave your lawn ready for spring and summer. Wondering what you may need? Here is our list of essential tools you will need for your spring cleanup:
Aerator

Kicking off the list of essential tools for spring cleanup is a an aerator! You can water and fertilize your yard all you would like, but without aerating the lawn to let these things reach the soil, your efforts will be fruitless. The soil beneath your grass has become compacted throughout the winter months so aerating your lawn will allow the air, water, and fertilizer to circulate, giving you that beautiful, lush lawn you desire.
Wondering what kind of aerator tools you may need? First, and most obvious, there is the simple fork. Its usage is simple enough, just stick it into the ground a few inches and wiggle it back and forth to open up the holes wider. Continue this process throughout the entire yard, sticking the fork into the earth every few inches. A hollow-tine fork is used in the same method, but removes the soil in cores. Fill these new holes in with a good fertilizer. Spiked boots can be a faster alternative to forking the lawn as these boots loosen up the soil compaction as you walk across the yard.
A scarifier is a handy tool that removes thatch from the base of the grass, assisting in letting water and fertilizer reach the root structures. There are plenty of tools around for aerating your lawn. Pick which works best for you and get to it!
Lawn Mower
(bonus, attachment for mulching)
This is likely the most obvious tool needed for that spring cleanup. Spring is the time to get back to mowing the lawn on a regular basis (check the ideal timing between each mow based on the type of grass your lawn has). Add an attachment for mulching and you have the perfect tool to dispatch of any leaves and debris that littered your lawn previously!
String Trimmer

A string trimmer, or weed eater to many, is another essential tool for spring cleanup. These can reach into places your lawn mower simply cannot and provides a more precise, manicured finish to the look of your lawn. String trimmers come in both electric and gas powered models.
Don’t spare the details this year and make your lawn look its best!
Pruning Shears and Hedge Trimmers

Two tools in one heading, both are used for cutting back those branches, leaves, and weeds that were left to weather the winter months. Getting a headstart on trimming these elements of your landscaping will help them flourish in the months to come. Pruning shears are useful for the smaller, more precise cuts in the flower garden while hedge trimmers are excellent for removing vines and cutting back branches. For hedge trimmers, consider pole hedge trimmers for higher branches. These allow you to reach those higher branches safely from the ground without the added hazards of climbing a ladder.
There are many tools available for spring yard cleaning. These essentials will get your lawn going after the harsher winter months, letting your yard flourish for spring and summer! As with all tools, ensure that your equipment is in proper working order before use. This could mean checking oil levels, spark plugs, or sharpening blades for optimum performance.
